Simple steps to avoid online shopping scams

A recent report by the ACCC’s Scamwatch service has revealed that so far in 2017 over 1000 online retail scam reports have been received leading to financial losses of over $150,000 for Australian online shoppers.

Online shopping scams are on the rise, especially with many online stores appearing on social media networks such as Facebook and Instagram. It’s becoming harder for online shoppers to spot scams.

Here are some simple steps that may help keep you safe when looking for good deals online:

1. Always read reviews

Reviews can often give you peace of mind that the products you are purchasing are legitimate. Don’t buy from websites that do not publish product reviews.

2. Only buy from online retailers who offer secure payment methods

Many shoppers who are victims of online shopping scams are unaware that they are making un-secure payments. One way you can see if the website you are using has secure payment gateways is to check the URL. If the URL contains ‘https’ and has a locked padlock symbol, you can have peace of mind that the website is secure.

3. Review the retailer’s returns and refund policy before making a purchase

All genuine retailers should advertise a return and refund policy on their website that outlines the steps involved to request a return or refund. Review this before you purchase so you know what your options are in case the product you purchase doesn’t live up to expectations.
